Risk Assessment and Genetic Testing
As breast health experts, our radiologists are well-equipped to assess your personal risk and propose customized breast imaging recommendations. The testing process is simple. Eligible patients will be contacted five days prior to the scheduled appointment and given the option to complete a brief, no-charge, High-Risk Assessment via a smartphone or through email. This step evaluates a woman’s personal breast cancer risk and determines her eligibility for genetic testing for a variety of hereditary cancers, such as breast, ovarian, colorectal, uterine, pancreatic, prostate, stomach, melanoma, and others.
If she has a greater than 20% lifetime risk for breast cancer, based on the Tyrer-Cuzick Model, we recommend additional breast cancer screening with breast MRI once a year, at a 6-month interval after the screening mammogram. This is the recommendation of The American Cancer Society, The American College of Radiology, The National Comprehensive Cancer Network and The American Society of Breast Surgeons.
If it is determined that a woman meets the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) genetic testing criteria, she will be advised and given the option to proceed with genetic testing during her appointment. Patients are informed of their genetic test results in 2-3 weeks and given the option to speak with a certified genetic counselor by phone at no charge. Also, all relevant findings will be sent to the patient’s referring physician along with recommendations for follow-up.
Ambry Genetics is in-network with the majority of health insurance providers. In order to provide genetic testing that is both affordable and accessible, Ambry also offers low self-pay options and has a robust financial assistance program. Family members of patients who test positive for a mutation in a cancer predisposition gene can have genetic testing for that mutation free of charge for 90 days following the relative’s test report.
